What is a Community Foundation?

Students at Gerlach Elementary school excitedly receive new library books from a Community Foundation donor advised fund gift.

A community foundation is a tax-exempt public charity created by and for the people in a local area.

Joining the Foundation gives you a better bang for your charitable buck now or through your estate.

How Do I Join?
Individuals, families, and businesses establish charitable funds to which they may contribute a variety of assets. Call us (775-333-5499) we will help you design a giving program that fits. You (or your children and grandchildren) can be actively involved in selecting grants to give from your fund.

Let your imagination free... What is that you want to do to make this a better place to live? We can help you find a way to make the big difference. Your privacy is respected. Grants can be made in your fund's name or kept completely anonymous.

>During 2008 the Community Foundation awarded grants and scholarships totaling more than $4 millon. In our 11 years we have distributed more than $36 million in grants and scholarships in our region and beyond!

Community foundations have in-depth knowledge of their communities. We remain alert to emerging needs in order to respond quickly and effectively. We convene groups—including donors, nonprofit leaders, and elected officials—to work together on community problem-solving.

Community foundations have a long tradition of helping bring about thoughtful, effective change. The first one was started in Cleveland Ohio in 1914, and there are now more than 700 throughout the United States.
